Domestic abuse isn't always a blatant, obvious thing. Sometimes, domestic abuse can be very subtle, especially to the eyes of someone on the outside. Here at The Virdone Law Firm, P.C., we are passionate about helping others detect and prevent domestic violence.
Below are three of the most common signs of domestic abuse. If you are seeking protection from an abusive partner or family member, or if you suspect that someone you know is being abused, then get help immediately. Call 9-1-1 in an emergency or call (516) 858-2648 for the counsel of an experienced domestic violence lawyer in Long Island.
1. Putting the Person Down
In many cases of domestic violence or abuse, the abusive individual constantly calls the victim names, puts them down about every little thing, and seeks to make them feel about themselves. If they rarely (if ever) give praise or words of affirmation and are constantly saying negative and hurtful things to the victim, then it might be a sign of domestic abuse at home.
2. Controlling the Person's Choices & Actions
Is the victim unable to leave the house, go out with friends, make a phone call, or handle money without the permission or instruction of the other person? Does the suspected abuser supervise and manipulate everything the person says and does and rarely ever let them do things without permission? This is a sign of abusive control and assertion of power over the victim and might be a sigh of domestic abuse.
3. Threats & Acts of Violence
The third and most obvious sign of domestic violence is exactly that... violence. Or at least threats of violence. Even if a person doesn't act on their threats, whether in public or in private, making a threat is itself a form of abuse. Does the supposed abuser regularly threaten to harm the victim as a way of controlling their actions? Or maybe they threaten to harm themselves as a way to make the victim feel guilty. These can all be signs of domestic abuse and violence.
