Attorney John Virdone Comments on Grandfamilies Act for News 12 Long Island

Attorney John Virdone, founding partner of The Virdone Law Firm, P.C., recently discussed the proposed Grandfamilies Act with News 12 Long Island. Introduced by Senator and presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), the bill would provide support for grandparents and other caregivers raising children whose parents have been affected by the opioid crisis.

In Long Island and across the country, the opioid epidemic continues to leave many families torn apart by addiction. The Grandfamilies Act was designed to alleviate the financial concerns of the grandparents and other family members who have taken over the job of childrearing from parents struggling with a drug problem. This legislation would allow grandparents and other caregivers to use children’s Social Security benefits in cases where they have had legal custody of the children for a minimum of one year. The bill would also allow service providers to give grandparents more support in applying for temporary custody. Furthermore, it would bar states from taking employment or income into account when allotting short-term financial assistance for grandparents and other caregivers.

As Attorney Virdone told News 12 Long Island, the Grandfamilies Act is a step in the right direction for families struggling amidst the opioid crisis: “By making it easier for grandparents or other caregivers to get the funding to support the children, this is really helping the children.”
